Where does the time go? 🥹

Veronica, self-named RONKA, is a force. Strong and beautiful, funny, a chatterbox just like her brother, who has bonded so sweetly with her. She has completed this family so perfectly, and given us all so much. We adore you, baby girl. ❤️

Leo turned 8 last week. 🥹🎂🍩🍕🫶🏼 I really don’t have words to express how much I love this boy. Here are some photos. ❤️

We lost our beautiful friend Debbie one month ago today. 💔

Debbie was fun and easy to be around. She asked great questions. She quoted 90s movies, (which is my love language) and she was tickled when you’d reciprocate. I felt like I grew up with her. She had a way of making you feel like that.

She had the perfect Great Lakes accent and her nose crinkled when she smiled and laughed, which happened a lot. She was a generous host, a fun dinner companion, and had a natural maternal instinct that extended beyond her own three children. She knew when you needed something, often before you’d even considered it. That was Deb.

I looked back on emails from her (my texts are gone) and found one from right before we moved back to New York in 2015 when I was pregnant with Leo. The email is full of thoughtful ruminations on how I might be feeling during these massive life changes and offers of help, a ready ear, and suggestions of time to spend together during what could prove to be a very isolated chapter of my life. It’s one of the sweetest, most kind emails I’ve ever received. Her daughter Margot was born 5 days later. About to give birth herself, and Debbie was writing me this email. That’s who she was.

Debbie loved searching online for houses for us to buy near them in New Jersey, and we came very close to buying one but canceled, and soon were swept back to LA, for good reason. I often think of how our lives would have been entwined had we moved so close to them. Luke and Brendan are very tight, even while far away, how would proximity have strengthened that bond? Would Margot and Leo be in class together? I would think of this parallel life often.

I wish I had more memories with Debbie I could replay in my mind, but big moves, life changes and a global pandemic kept our families geographically apart for the past several years.

They sent us a gift when Veronica was born. For us, she said, not the baby. We had just lost Luke’s mom and sister a month before. It was a deeply complicated time. They were there for us. (Continued in comments)
